Where to look first
- IfThe smell is warm, damp and lingers after the dryer runsCheck the dryer vent for lint, crushing or a stuck exterior flap.
- IfThe smell is like sewage near the washerLook at the standpipe trap; refill it with water and recheck.
- IfThe smell is sour and strongest at the washer doorClean the door gasket and detergent drawer, and run a cleaning cycle.
- IfThe closet floor or wall is dampLook for a leaking hose, a drain overflow or condensation and fix the source.
Laundry closet terms
- Standpipe
- The vertical drain pipe that receives washer discharge. It holds a water seal in its trap.
- Vent hood
- The exterior cover where dryer air leaves the building. A stuck flap blocks airflow.
- Lint trap
- The removable screen in the dryer that catches lint; a clogged one raises humidity.
- Door gasket
- The rubber ring around a front-load washer door that can hold moisture and residue.
- Drain pan
- A shallow tray under a washer in upper-floor units that catches leaks.
Small room, big effect
A laundry closet may be only a few feet wide, but it often sits next to a bedroom or hallway and shares air with the rest of the unit. Warm, humid air from a poorly vented dryer spreads straight into the living space, and a smell that begins in the closet can seem to come from everywhere.
When a resident leaves, the machines may be left with water in the drum, detergent residue in the dispenser and damp lint in the trap. Over a vacancy those turn sour. A standpipe that was seldom used can also dry out, letting a drain smell into the closet.
Because dryer vents carry heat and lint, they also deserve attention for safety reasons beyond odor. A vent that is crushed behind the dryer or full of lint reduces airflow and can create a fire concern. Report and correct any restricted vent through the proper maintenance channel.
Turn-time routine for a laundry closet
Pull the dryer out and inspect the vent
Look for crushing, sagging, disconnections and lint buildup in the duct.
Clean the lint trap and housing
Remove lint from the trap area as well as the screen.
Check the exterior hood
Confirm that the flap opens freely and nothing blocks it.
Clean the washer
Wipe the gasket and dispenser, and run a cleaning cycle with the door left open afterward.
Refill the standpipe trap
Pour water down it and watch that it drains normally.
Common questions
Should a restricted dryer vent be reported even without odor?
Yes. A blocked vent affects drying and can be a fire concern, so route it to maintenance regardless of smell.
